If you are asking yourself, “which cordless vacuum cleaner to buy?” it’s because you have decided that you need one. You need it because you want an alternative to your corded vacuum. You know that the cordless vacuums are not as powerful as the corded ones, and the battery powered machine can only clean as long as the battery remains charged, yet you prefer cordless over the corded vacuum because of many reasons. Let’s look at some of them.

Reasons for Buying Cordless Vacuums

  • You wanted freedom of movement and power to clean anywhere any time
  • You found your corded vacuum cleaner bulky and cumbersome
  • You found cleaning with corded vacuum tedious and boring
  • You realized that cleaning accessories, stairs, even your car seat, is difficult unless your vacuum is cordless
  • You saw that the cord was actually tethering you to the switchboard
  • Your corded vacuum cleaner was not good for an emergency cleaning situation in your kitchen or living room
  • You have a back that cramps and aches after every weekly corded vacuuming ordeal
  • You remember the space your corded vacuum cleaner occupied and it’s natural that you wanted a vacuum that occupied less space.

You don’t want to buy a machine just because you don’t like the one you have. That’s negative reasoning. You will buy a cordless vacuum cleaner because of its advantages in make and its benefits for your household. So, before we go into the specific details of various actual brands available, let’s look at the form of an average cordless vacuum i.e. its parts and how it works.

Your cordless vacuum cleaner has a mechanism for creating suction. That means, it must have a motor to power a fan and a fan that it will rotate at various speeds to create various amounts of suction within the machine. Dust and dirt will be sucked into the machine once partial vacuum is created inside the machine. Your vacuum cleaner has an intake port for that purpose.

The air that is sucked in along with dust etc. is passed through air filter before being let out of the machine. The dust particles are trapped inside the filter and then sent for storage either to a storage bag or a bin. All the components are housed inside the main body of the machine. Cordless vacuums work based on the principle of a vacuum.

There may be lots of technical details and innovations which are changing and becoming more efficient all the time, such as patented Cyclone actions for capturing dirt and dust particles, but basically it us about mechanisms for sucking dirt in and filtering it out.

The battery of your vacuum is the thing that gives its motor power to move a fan that has angled blades. The fan moves fast or slow based on your cleaning needs that depend on the amount of suction you want. The moving fans suck air in from the intake port. With air come all the dust and dirt particles.

They are passed through a filter that traps the particles and releases the purified air that is then sent out through the exhaust post. The dust etc. trapped inside is then shifted to a storage bag or bin that is then removed periodically and either disposed of or emptied and replaced.

So, you know that you want a cordless vacuum cleaner. The question you ask yourself next is: “Which one to buy?” That is not an easy choice as there are three basic types of cordless cleaner: handheld (usually for smaller jobs); stick cleaners (modern, sleek designs); or uprights (ones that look more like the conventional cleaners we are  all familiar with). The last two types are also often able to be converted into a hand held section.  So what to do?

Here we have answered that question by looking at three trustworthy and popular market brands and compared a range of their products to help you make the decision more easily.

The brands to be covered in detail here are Dyson, Bissell and Hoover. Why? Because they belong to the top trusted and performing brands of the market. So let’s look at them one by one.

Dyson is one of the top players in cordless vacuum field.  It is innovative and is so confident that cordless is the way to go, that it has recently announced that although still available,  it will not be developing corded cleaners further in future.  Dyson’s most recent range is their Cyclone V10 series of three ergonomically designed stick cleaners.  All three of these models have the added advantage and tools to enable them each to be converted into a hand held cleaner.  Powered by the Dyson V10 digital motor (the smallest and lightest of Dyson motors), market testing suggests this series offers the most powerful suction of any cordless vacuum.  They have a longer battery run time than previous models and the Dyson hygienic dirt dispenser.  The V10 Animal, is designed for pet hair removal and has a larger bin volume.  The Absolute also has a larger bin, but includes an additional softer brush head ideal for hard floors.  Finally the Motorhead has a smaller bin size and is lighter.

Bissell has three popular models in the field: the 1984 Air Ram, Bolt ION XRT 2 in 1 (model 1313) and Bolt Pet (model 1954). BissellBolt ION XRT (model 1313) is a lightweight, cordless vacuum with a powerful clean. An easy-to-use cordless vacuum with a removable hand vacuum, the powerful 25.2 V Li-Ion battery provides up to 40 minutes of run time.  This is a longer run time than the basic Bolt 1313 series.  EdgeReach Technology delivers powerful suction to the edges of the vacuum foot to capture dirt and debris even from corners. The 2-Way Folding Handle flexes forward and backward to easily clean under furniture and for compact storage. The included crevice tool with dusting brush helps clean hard-to-reach.

Bolt Pet 1954 is a  lightweight, cordless stick vacuum offering a powerful stick vacuum and a removable hand-held vacuum, so you can tackle pet messes on hard floors, upholstery, carpeted areas, and more. The 14.4V lithium ion battery, provides up to 25 minutes of run time and specially designed tools for both the stick vacuum and hand vacuum help make pet cleanup easy and quick. The advanced pet hair brush roll is engineered to improve cleaning on carpeted areas while making hair Pickup easy. The removable hand vacuum has the pet hair nozzle tool for lifting up embedded hair without damaging upholstery, while the sweep & scoop tool makes cleaning large messes easy. The extra-large dirt bin is designed to hold more messes, so you can clean more and spend less time emptying. Plus, the bolt lithium pet features clean-turn filtration to make it easier to keep your filters clean. The 2-way folding handle flexes forward and backward to easily clean under furniture and for versatile cleaning and compact storage. The Bissell bolt lithium pet vacuum also includes a convenient charging base for rapid recharge and storage of multiple tools.

The Bissell Air Ram 1984 has 40 Minutes of run time and an innovative PowerRemovable Lithium Ion battery for 40 minutes of fade-free power and cordless convenience power foot design and multi-surface brush roll for  high performance cleaning on hard floors and carpets.the removable battery makes charging easy and the removable dirt bin and LED lights enhance cleaning.   With swivel steering and a lay flat handle, Air Ram maneuvers under and around furniture with ease.

Hoover offers a wide range of cordless vacuums out of which we will pick three models: BH50020PC Linx Signature, the BH52210PC Cruise and the BH51120 PC Cleaner Air Lift.  All three use the wind tunnel technology to channel suction and lift for deep down cleaning and can clean various kinds of floors and surfaces.

Hoover BH52210PC Cruise is light and easier to handle as it weighs below 5 pounds and comes loaded with features. The other two models are nearly double the weight of the Cruise and although they are easy to move around, they look and operate in a way similar to more traditional upright cleaners.  For example the Lynx Signature does not convert to a hand held model and although the Cleaner Air Lift has a canister that lifts from the base, this is not a small hand held option.  They are all three powerful cleaners with good performance and the Cruise comes with headlights and a number of tools viz. the crevice tool for narrow nooks, the dusting brush and the upholstery tool for surface cleaning and a wall mount so that it can be stored at a height and location that is convenient to reach.

The hour of decision has come. Now you have to weigh the pros and cons, look at various relevant features and buy the right brand and model for your house. If you don’t mind paying nearly twice the price of an average cordless vacuum in order to buy a very powerful, sturdy and long run time vacuum, Dyson Cyclone  V10 Absolute is just right for you.

If you want a very light weight and easy to lift and work with model with lower price range Hoover’s Cruise shall be your choice. If you want to walk the middle path, Bissell Air Ram is your vacuum. Choose wisely my friend.
